The Dipoto Mariners Can Be Counted On for a Mid-80s Win Total

By now, it’s generally accepted that the Mariners, as structured, will not fall to the depths of MLB with 95 losses, but they’re not winning 95 games either. In 2022, they made the playoffs as a Wild Card, advanced to the ALDS, and lost to the eventual World Series champion Astros.

They were 88-74 in 2023 and 85-77 in 2024. Their perceived underachievement (which was likely an overestimation of their talent) led to General Manager Jerry Dipoto firing his supposed best friend, manager Scott Servais.

Servais found out via a tweet from Ken Rosenthal instead of being informed by the team.

Seattle’s starting pitching is excellent, with Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, and Bryan Woo. The bullpen is passable. They are very good defensively. Their problem is that they don’t score enough runs.

The Mariners Did Not Address Their Needs

There was talk that Seattle would consider moving one of its starting pitchers and deal from strength to get an impact bat, but they didn’t. Nor did they trade for or sign any run producer.

If their pitching can replicate its 2024 performance, it’s possible that a better year from young center field star Julio Rodriguez, a full season with Randy Arozarena, and improvement from J.P. Crawford, and they can score enough to stay in contention. They hired a new hitting coach, Kevin Seitzer, who had been with the Braves during their recent run of success.

It’s difficult to understand why the normally aggressive Dipoto didn’t try to find an established power hitter to boost the offense. If they don’t get the necessary offense from the holdovers, they’ll end up where they were in 2024.

The 2025 Mariners Will Repeat the Performance of the 2024 Mariners

Even if the offense is better, will the pitching and defense be as good as it was in 2024? The question marks that were in place for Seattle are still in place. Because of that, they will end up in the same place they were last season, with a win total in the mid-80s.
