Mets Owner Steve Cohen Gets His Man in Soto
All along, the perception was that if the financials were close, transcendent free agent Juan Soto would remain in New York, only with his 2024 team, the Yankees. In reality, as proven by his decision to sign with the Mets, he was leaving the pinstripes if the money was close.
Despite protestations to the contrary and the sweeteners Mets owner Steve Cohen used to lure Soto like a luxury suite, the underlying sense is that Soto didn’t like playing for the Yankees. There is a reputation for corporate coldness that is offputting to many players. Of course, he wanted the most money. He got it, so it’s quite possible that was the bottom line.
Regardless, this was a thunderbolt across the sky for all of MLB.
The Mets Brought Back Most of Their NLCS Roster
The team didn’t stop at Soto. They re-signed Manaea, Stanek, and Winker. They also added Clay Holmes, Griffin Canning, Frankie Montas, A.J. Minter, and Jose Siri. Montas and Manaea were injured in spring training but are not out for the long term.
The 2024 season was a surprise, given how poorly the team played in the first two months. They fell to 11 games below .500 at the start of June before climbing back into the race and eventually securing a Wild Card spot. They stunned the Brewers and Phillies in the first two rounds before succumbing to the Dodgers.
The Mets Are a World Series Threat
With the addition of Soto and the puzzle pieces they signed and retained, plus Cohen’s willingness to spend and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns’ savvy, the Mets are a true World Series contender.
They will easily go beyond 92.5 wins.
