A huge weekend of horse racing action is set for Saturday, with all eyes on Churchill Downs and the 151st Kentucky Derby. However, the Classic season also kicks off in the United Kingdom on May 3, 2025, as the 2000 Guineas will be staged at Newmarket. Find the odds and picks for the race here.

Event Preview

The first British Classic of the 2025 season is set for Saturday, May 3, 2025, as Newmarket hosts the 2,000 Guineas. This race is the shortest of the races on the Triple Crown and it is followed by the Epsom Derby and St Leger. A talented field is set to go to post for one of the biggest flat races on the UK schedule.

Aidan O’Brien has had leading hopes in each of the last two renewals, but both Auguste Rodin and City Of Troy were beaten on their reappearances in the 2,000 Guineas. Therefore, the undefeated Twain is likely to be easy to overlook, despite his impressive performances as a two-year-old.

Interestingly, John Gosden has never won the 2,000 Guineas, but he could have a leading hope in the form of Field Of Gold at Newmarket. The three-year-old has won three from five starts on the turf, and he was an excellent winner of the G3 Craven Stakes at HQ in mid-April.

Charlie Appleby’s runners always start the season in red-hot form, meaning that Ruling Court and Shadow of Light deserve huge respect. The former could be the pick of the stable start after winning impressively on his seasonal reappearance in the Jumeirah 2,000 Guineas at Meydan.

At the prices, Green Impact could out-run his odds for the John Harrington stable. The three-year-old was an impressive victor on his last two starts in Ireland last season, including when beating the O’Brien-trained Delacroix in the G2 Champions Juvenile Stakes.

2000 Guineas Picks

While Field Of Gold and Ruling Court deserve respect, I like the chances of Scorthy Champ for the Joseph O’Brien team on Saturday.

The three-year-old has won twice from three career starts, and was very impressive on his final start as a two-year-old when beating the subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Henri Matisse in the G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes.
