NHL history looks set to be made before the end of the regular season, as Alex Ovechkin is just two goals shy of Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals.

The Washington Capitals star closed in on the record after scoring in the team’s recent outing against the Carolina Hurricanes.

But, could Ovechkin break the record as soon as Friday’s clash with the Chicago Blackhawks?

Ovechkin Set to Make NHL Scoring History

There is a growing sense that it is a case of when and not if Ovechkin will break Gretzky’s long-standing scoring record in the NHL.

The Capitals star could eclipse the tally recorded by the legend as early as Friday’s clash with the Blackhawks. Chicago have allowed the third-most goals in the NHL this season.

Failing that, Ovechkin will still have six further opportunities to break the record in the regular season. The Capitals could yet play a significant role in the playoffs, as they sit top of the Metropolitan Division.

The Russian-born star already holds NHL records for the most power play goal, most away goals, and most overtime goals. But, the long-standing Gretzky record is the one that he has had his eyes on for a prolonged period of time.

There is also the chance that Ovechkin breaks the record on his 1,487th appearance in the NHL, which is the exact number of appearances Gretsky made when setting the record.
