The A’s Have Some Pieces in Place

It’s inexplicable that in 2025, MLB has two teams that are, for all intents and purposes, homeless. But that is the case with the Athletics (who, notably, are not being labeled as having a home city while they play their games in Sacramento) and the Rays.

At least the Rays’ ballpark issue results from a natural disaster rather than a man-made one, as is the case with the A’s.

Regardless, the A’s still have a competent GM, David Forst, and a good manager, Mark Kotsay. In 2024, the lack of spending and attempts to flee Oakland led to preseason predictions suggesting they would lose well over 100 games. They didn’t even come close.

Already in place are slugging DH Brent Rooker (39 homers in 2024), catcher Shea Langeliers (29 homers), talented former Marlins first-round draft pick JJ Bleday (20 homers and a .726 OPS), outfielder Lawrence Butler (22 homers and 18 stolen bases without getting caught), and dominating closer Mason Miller (104 K’s in 65 innings).

A Few Recognizable Veterans Were Brought Onboard

The A’s at least made a moderate attempt to get better and bring in some competent veterans for 2025. Luis Severino was solid for the Mets in 2024 and signed a 3-year, $67 million contract. They also brought in former Rays pitcher Jeffrey Springs, pitcher Jose LeClerc, and third baseman Gio Urshela.

While these are not BREAKING NEWS acquisitions, they are experienced big leaguers who can help the A’s young players and provide steadiness in the clubhouse during a difficult time.

Can the A’s Go Beyond 70 Wins?

On paper, the A’s are one of the worst teams in the American League, along with the Angels and White Sox, but they did not let that dissuade them from putting in an effort and overachieving in 2024.

They will be sellers at the deadline and are looking toward a future in a new location. Still, Kotsay gets his players to maximize their abilities, and they have a solid core of young players.

They will hover around 70 wins and should surpass it by a hair.
