- The Los Angeles Angels were 63-99 in 2024 and finished in last place in the AL West
- Current marquee star Mike Trout missed most of the season after twice tearing his meniscus
- Former Angels star Shohei Ohtani had fled for the Dodgers, won his 3rd MVP, was a 50 home run, 50 stolen base player, and won a World Series
- After moderate MLB acquisitions for 2025, oddsmakers have the Angels at over/under 72.5 wins

The Angels Have Not Finished Above .500 in a Decade
The Angels tried to win with arguably the two best players in baseball on their roster, Ohtani and Trout, but they couldn’t do it. Then, in 2024, they lost Ohtani to free agency and Trout to injury and couldn’t win that way either.
What next?
The last time LA finished above .500 was in 2015 when they were 85-77. That was five managers and two GMs ago.
The 2025 Angels Could Be Respectable if Everything Goes Right
For 2025, they signed veteran pitchers Yusei Kikuchi, Kyle Hendricks, and Kenley Jansen. To try and boost their flagging offense, they signed Travis d’Arnaud, Yoan Moncada, and Jorge Soler.
None of these acquisitions will vault them from where they were in 2024 to contention in 2025.
On paper, their roster isn’t as bad as it was in 2024. Their starting rotation with the new additions joining Tyler Anderson and Jose Soriano should be adequate. Offensively, another injury to perhaps the worst free agent signing in baseball history, Anthony Rendon, is addition by subtraction.
Zach Neto was a 5.1 bWAR player in 2024 and, at age 23, has pop, speed, and Gold Glove-caliber defense at shortstop. Taylor Ward hit 25 homers in 2024. Jo Adell, once the top prospect in baseball, is so far a bust but still has potential.
What can Trout provide? At age 33 and with his battered body, it’s wise to temper expectations. The Angels would likely love to clear that contract, but no one is taking it with Trout in his current state, and that does not refer to the State of California.
Thinking Positively, the Angels Will Win At Least 73 Games
Although there is little reason to be enthusiastic about the Angels, they have some trustworthy veterans and are due a little luck. Manager Ron Washington’s players have historically played hard for him. That should be enough to get them over 72.5 wins.
