Event Preview

The first leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown is set for Sunday, May 4, at Newmarket. Fillies such as Love have later followed up success in the 1000 Guineas with a victory in the Oaks. However, it is a feat that is rarely attempted in this modern day.

Desert Flower has long been considered to be the outstanding chance in the race this year for trainer Charlie Appleby. The filly has won on all four career starts, which included a dominant five-length success at Newmarket in the G1 Fillies’ Mile.

However, she is by no means the only talented filly in the race this weekend. Red Letter could be a fascinating improver in the field, despite finishing fourth in the G1 Moyglare at the Curragh last September. Stepped up to a mile for the first time, she could have plenty of improvement to come.

Duty First is one of the few contenders with a recent run under her belt, and the Archie Watson-trained runner deserves respect after her dominant win in the G3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury in mid-April.

Ralph Beckett is a trainer who is no stranger to success, and Chantilly Lace is a fascinating contender after just one prior racecourse start. She stayed seven furlongs extremely well on heavy ground at Salisbury last October, and a return to better ground could suit her chances.

1000 Guineas Picks

Aidan O’Brien’s Lake Victoria has already shown her quality on track, and she could be a solid contender against the favorite on Sunday. The three-year-old was last seen overcoming traffic to land the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, taking her winning record to five.

She is now a four-time winner in stakes company, and her experience over a mile with Ryan Moore, likely to take the ride, ticks plenty of boxes.
